If you want to get a feel for what it’s like to live in Central Beach, spend a Saturday around Humiston Park.
Early in the morning, Ocean Drive belongs to the Farmers Market crowd. A few hours later, people are wandering in and out of the boutiques, heading to lunch or walking across to the beach. By evening, the same few blocks have shifted again as people head out for dinner.
It’s one of the things I love about this part of Vero Beach. There’s a rhythm to it, and Humiston Park sits right in the middle of almost all of it.
For someone visiting Vero Beach, it makes for a great Saturday. But if you live nearby, this isn't really an itinerary. It's your neighborhood.
Saturday Morning Starts at the Farmers Market
The Vero Beach Farmers Market has been part of Saturday mornings on Ocean Drive since 2007. Every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, vendors set up at 3000 Ocean Drive, directly across from Humiston Park.
The market was originally started by the Oceanside Business Association and is now hosted by the Florida nonprofit Business Inspiring Kindness. Nearly two decades later, it has become one of those Vero traditions that locals don't really need to put on their calendars. You just know it's there on Saturday morning.
You'll find fresh produce, baked goods, coffee, cheeses, seafood, flowers, plants, prepared foods, local art and plenty of things you didn't necessarily come looking for.
Some vendors have become fixtures themselves. Akamai Accents has been part of the Farmers Market since its very first day, bringing orchids and tropical plants week after week. Wang & Dickerson Rare & Artisan Tea is another name you'll see at the market, along with a long list of local growers, bakers, makers and food vendors.
And yes, you'll see plenty of dogs. The market is pet-friendly, although during our hotter months, you definitely need to pay attention to the temperature of the pavement.
By noon, the tents start coming down and Ocean Drive begins changing over to the next part of the day.
You Don't Have to Get Back in the Car
This is where Central Beach is different from many other parts of Vero Beach.
Once you're at Humiston Park, you can leave the car parked and spend the next several hours walking.
Head toward Beachland Boulevard and you'll reach Ocean Grill, one of Vero Beach's best-known landmarks. Its history and oceanfront location make it one of those places that is as much a part of Vero as it is a restaurant.
Then there are the shops.
Treasure Lane Boutique is along Beachland Boulevard, and around Ocean Drive and the nearby side streets you'll find the kind of smaller, independently owned businesses that give this area its personality.
The Lazy Daisy, Kemp's Shoe Salon, The Petite Shop, Consider the Cook and Veranda Jewelry are all the kinds of places you can wander through without needing a real shopping agenda.
That's really the point.
Central Beach isn't a giant shopping district, and I wouldn't want it to be. You can walk a few blocks, pop into a boutique, stop for something to eat, grab a coffee or ice cream, and still be looking at palm trees and catching glimpses of the Atlantic.
And Then There's the Beach
It would be impossible to talk about Humiston Park without talking about what's directly behind it...the ocean.
Humiston Beach Park is one of Vero Beach's most recognizable public beach parks, with beach access, a playground, picnic areas, restrooms, showers and plenty of green space.
So a Saturday morning doesn't have to be Farmers Market or beach. It can easily be both.
Walk the beach first and then head over to the market. Pick something up at one of the food vendors and take it over to the park. Let the kids or grandkids play for a while. Or do what plenty of us do and simply find somewhere to sit and watch Ocean Drive go by.
During season, Saturday mornings can get busy, and parking can require a little more patience. That's also when you really begin to appreciate living close enough to walk or ride your bike.
By Evening, Ocean Drive Changes Again
After the Farmers Market is packed away and the shops begin winding down, Central Beach moves into its evening rhythm.
Francesca's Italian Kitchen sits directly across from Humiston Park and brings people back to this same corner for dinner. A little farther along Ocean Drive and the surrounding streets, there are more choices for everything from casual meals to a nicer night out.
That's something people don't always realize until they spend some time here.
Central Beach is active without feeling like a big tourist district. There are restaurants, shops, parks and things happening, but tucked behind all of that are residential streets where people are walking their dogs, riding bikes, working in their yards or heading to the beach.
And that brings me to the part I think matters most if you're considering buying here.
What Is It Actually Like to Live in Central Beach?
When people first start looking at homes in Vero Beach, they often tell me they want to be "close to the beach."
But once we start talking, I usually find out there's more to it than that.
Do you want to actually walk to the beach?
Would you like to ride your bike to the Farmers Market on Saturday morning?
Do you picture walking to dinner instead of getting in the car?
Would you like to be close to the shops and activity of Ocean Drive, or would you rather live a few blocks away where it's quieter?
Those questions matter in Central Beach because a relatively short distance can make a noticeable difference in how you live.
Central Beach Is More Than Ocean Drive
One of my favorite things about this area is how quickly it changes once you leave Ocean Drive.
Within a few blocks, you're back on residential streets with single-family homes, condos, mature landscaping and the kind of older Vero Beach character that can be difficult to see when you're simply scrolling through listings online.
And Central Beach gives you access to more than Humiston Park and Ocean Drive.
Depending on where you live, you may also be able to walk or bike to Riverside Park, Riverside Theatre and the Vero Beach Museum of Art. The Barber Bridge is nearby when you need to head to the mainland, yet you're still living on Vero's barrier island with the Atlantic Ocean just minutes away.
That's a pretty unique combination.
Not Every Part of Central Beach Lives the Same
This is something I think buyers should understand before choosing a home based solely on a map.
Central Beach isn't one uniform neighborhood.
Some streets put you right in the middle of the activity. Others feel surprisingly tucked away even though you're only a few blocks from Ocean Drive. Some homes are an easy walk to Humiston Park. Others put you closer to Riverside Park or farther north toward Jaycee Park and the boardwalk.
You'll find older homes with tons of character, beautifully renovated properties, newer construction and condos, sometimes within a very small radius.
That's why I always encourage buyers to think beyond bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage.
Think about how you want to live when you walk out your front door.
A Saturday Tells You a Lot About a Neighborhood
That's really why I think Saturday morning is one of the best times to experience Central Beach.
Start at the Farmers Market. Walk Ocean Drive. Browse a few shops. Grab something to eat. Walk over to the beach. Then drive or bike through some of the residential streets behind it.
You'll start to understand why people who love Central Beach aren't simply choosing it because it's "beachside."
They're choosing a lifestyle where a surprising amount of Vero Beach is right outside their door.

Central Beach happens to be one of those areas I know especially well because I've watched it change while also seeing so much of its character stay the same.
